Online Shopping: Cyberg Monday

Over the past couple of years Americans are doing more online shopping. The reasons for this being is that it is less time consuming than actually visiting a store, there are a lot of manufacturers that are now selling directly to the consumers online at deeply discounted prices, and there is more variety and people are able to find exactly what they are looking for or simply contact the manufacturer directly through the web to make the product to their precise measures. Amazon.com is a perfect example of a website that people visit in order to find deeply discounted prices and items are easily accessible by just typing the name of which ever thing is being looked for, also many companies offer free shipping with the purchase. A trend that is becoming increasingly popular is the “Cyber Monday” – it is the Monday after black Friday and it usually offers good deals for online shoppers. This year the Cyber Monday sales topped at almost 2 billion dollars, which is an amazing 17% growth compared to last year sales. At the current rate of online buying the money spent by consumers in online transactions will soon surpass that of retail. Technology such as mobile cell phones are making it possible for people to shop anywhere at any time. The convenience of online shopping has become a very attractive option for the people of today with very complex and busy life-styles.

The Sandy Effect: Gas shortages across the NY/NJ area

The recent devastating storm that hit the north eastern part of the United States claimed the lives of dozens of people, billions of dollars in property damage, and extensive gas shortages across the region. Consumers rushed to the few operating gas stations that remained open creating long lines, sometimes as far as a mile long. Refineries in the north east region had shut down before the storm arrived to prevent damage to equipment, some had to clear up debris in order to get back operating. Gas stations across the region also were affected by the storm, many lost power. Many people started taking matters into their own hands buying gas outside of the affected regions and selling them at absurd prices to those affected by the storm. There were many reports of people being car jacked because their vehicles had gas, while many disputes and brawls were taking place at gas stations across the NY/NJ area. But despite all of these inconveniences I believe that the delay in a higher supply of gas across the northeast leads down to the supply and demand theory, it is not convenient for oil companies to mass distribute trucks load of gas because it could bring down gas prices across the region which is obviously not good for business. I think that in times of disasters such as this one, companies should set aside business practices and work with their fellow human beings in the relief efforts. There are many companies aiding needy residents of the north eastern region that have been affected by the storm but large oil companies such as Chevron and Exxon/Mobil are not contributing towards relief efforts or making it easier for the people of the north east region to have access to gas.

Mega Corporations

Today's industries are being saturated by the mega-corporations. Everyday there is less competition and a growing number of a few corporations having dominance over a wide range of industries including clothing, agriculture, food, and the media. This growth by a small number of companies makes it difficult for up-and-coming organizations to compete in such markets. The large companies offer prices that can not be offered by smaller competitors. An example of a company with a large share of its market is that of Nike; if Nike would be a country it would rank as the worlds 102nd biggest country, this company had profits of $19.16. The food giant McDonalds if ranked as a country it would be the 92nd largest country in the world with $24.07 billion dollars in revenue. Another large corporation with an extremely large share of their market is the the retail giant Walmart. If this company was a country it would have the 25th largest economy in the world at $421.89 billion dollars. The extreme growth of a small group of companies make it very difficult for small innovative companies to grow or further develop their businesses. Some companies are even forced into bankrupcy because they can not compete with the bargain prices offered by mega competitors.

Online Advertising

This blog is for all those who own large, small, family, or personal businesses. No matter what type of business you are in, you should be taking advantage of online advertising. Online advertising is more efficient and allows your products and/or services to reach a broader audience. Almost every one today has access to the internet even those on the most remote places of our planet. Advertising online has the benefits that it is less expensive than traditional methods such as yellow pages, newspapers, radio stations, etc. It is also less time consuming and there are online marketing companies that can work around any business budget and almost guarantee growth in your business by using their services.
There are different ways through which a business or an individual can advertise online. For example, a small company can use the Google search engine to allow local customers to have faster and easier access to their services/ products. There are also broader ways of advertising businesses often use websites such as Facebook and twitter the two largest social networks in the world to promote their products, but these can be some what more expensive and are more frequently used by larger companies. So, if you are in business or simply have services and/or products to offer you should strongly consider using the internet as a marketing tool.

Sex Sells !!!!

Sexual advertisements can be seen just about everywhere. It is one of the easiest ways of capturing consumers attention towards a product or service. Sexual ads are used by a wide range of fields, such as clothing, food, furniture, magazines, etc. The advertisements can vary in terms of exposure, some tend to be more conservative than others. There have been many complaints raised over sexual exposure in advertisements particularly from religious groups who find these offensive. Sexual content on advertisements catch our attention because of our natural curiosity for skin exposure. It can become a challenge for companies to get their message through when using sexual content because the consumer gets distracted by paying attention to the explicit content, also it can sometimes turn out to be a bad marketing strategy specially if the product has no relationship whatsoever with the sexual content ; as for example a tooth paste company airing an ad with a good looking female exposing her breast or a focus on her curves, this type of things would confuse the audience and the main message would most likely be miss-understood.

Advertizing Wars: Apple VS Samsung

A battle between Apple and Samsung began as a lawsuit that was fought and won by the Iphone maker.Since, there has been a fierce advertising war between the two. Most of it has been led by Samsung through advertisements such as their famous “It Doesn’t take a genius” Ad. The Apple company did not have to move a finger to strike back against this ad because their own fans took care of it by using the same format but changing the message of the advertisement to “Don't settle for cheap plastic”. The Galaxy S III makers then turned around and aired televised advertisements, in the ads they humiliate the Iphone lovers by showing how they had been waiting for the newest "coolest" product when in reality it has already been out-there and is being used by cool people. In a personal perspective about the subject I believe that Samsung has a better phone product with the Galaxy S III, but Apple has a larger base of customer loyalty and great advertising strategies. Who do you think is a better phone maker? !!!
